The Oakland Housing Authority has allowed roaches, rats and maggots to wreak havoc at the Coliseum Gardens apartment complex in East Oakland, tenants charged yesterday in court.

The quality of life at the low-income complex has suffered as a result of poor maintenance by the Housing Authority, residents told an Oakland Municipal Court jury.

“They make me mad because they’re crawling on me,” Marklon Ayers, 13, said of nighttime visits by roaches. “They’d be dropping in our food.”

But an attorney for the authority said housing officials had taken steps to exterminate the vermin, from distributing letters about upcoming inspections to sending crews to handle complaints.
